The Meritorious Virtues and the Original Vows of the Medicine Buddha of Pure Crystal Radiance Sutra is often referred to in an abbreviated form, as the Sutra of the Meritorious Virtues of the Medicine Buddha’s Original Vows, the Sutra of the Meritorious Virtues of the Medicine Master’s Original Vows, the Sutra of the Medicine Buddha’s Original Vows, or simply, the Sutra of the Medicine Buddha (Skt. Bhagavanbhaisajyaguru-vaiduryaprabhasya purvapranidhana-visesa-vistara; Ch. yao shi liuli guang rulai benyuan jing). The entire sutra is a single volume in total, translated into Chinese from the Sanskrit original by Master Xuanzang (596-664CE).
The Medicine Buddha Sutra narrates how the Buddha, in response to Manjusri Bodhisattva’s request, spoke to highly cultivated monastics, bodhisattvas, kings, and magistrates concerning the meritorious virtues of the Medicine Buddha’s Eastern Pure Land of Crystal Radiance, and detailed the twelve great vows that the Medicine Buddha made when he was a bodhisattva.
